Sexting: Virtual Abuse of the Human Body While the increased access to technology over the recent years provides almost every consumer with new communication tools at his or her fingertips, it also leads to negative effects. ââ¬Å"Sextingâ⬠has become extremely popular, especially among teenage consumers. This new action is said to be any sexually explicit messages or pictures between cell phones. Sexting has become so emotionally and physically dangerous that there have been cases where suicide or other self-inflicted injuries have occurred because of the spreading of these messages. The dangers of sexting have been introduced to the public but more people need to become fully aware of the dangers that can occur from the misuse of technology.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Law makers are quickly taking affirmative action to make sending a sext message a misdemeanor or even a criminal act (Chiaramonte). They are doing so in order to prevent more deaths from occurring from sextin g. One way that law enforcement is attempting to prevent sexting from occurring is by first making themselves aware of the situation. In a FBI Bulletin, officers are educated about the specific criteria of sexting and are given information on how to advise young people on whether they are sexting or not, and how to prevent and handle any sexting situations (Bowker and Sullivan). While sexting and child pornography hold up as different crimes in court with different punishments, they still have a close relationship. Sexting would be classified as child pornography in cases if the image that is sent is of a minor. If so, then it is child pornography. Even if it is not of a minor, it would still be considered pornography because of the explicitness of the image. Many people do not realize that the two have such a close relationship and therefore do not relate the two together. Since there are legal actions involved in a sexting case, this crime is not taken lightly. For example, in Orl ando, an 18-year-old male fought with his 16-year-old girlfriend and sent out intimate pictures that she had intended only for him.
